BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Fresh off winning the UNCW Seahawk Invitational, Campbell junior DeLohnni Nicol-Samuel has been named the Big South Conference's Choice Hotels male Runner of the Week.
The Brandon, Manitoba native posted a personal record 5K time of 15:24.40 on Friday in the Port City, topping his previous best by eight seconds. Nicol-Samuel beat out UNC Wilmington's Wil Zahorodny, who checked in with a 15:35.40. The Nicol-Samuel win came a week after Zahorodny took top honors at the Campbell Invitational, when the CU junior finished runner-up.
The Campbell men took second in the team standings of the race, while the women claimed the team title in their bracket at UNCW.
The weekly honor is the first for Nicol-Samuel in his CU career, and the first ever Big South Runner of the Week accolade for a Camel. Campbell joined the Big South Conference in July 2011.
Terence Attema was the only Camel honored last season with a runner of the week award, taking home the Atlantic Sun's equivalent after winning the 2010 Seahawk Invitational. CU runners were given 16 runner of the week awards in the A-Sun.
Nicol-Samuel and the Camels will again hit the trails this weekend, traveling to Conway, S.C. for the Coastal Carolina Invitational / Big South Preview on Saturday.
