Rachel Deline Leads Camels in Opener
BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Camel senior Rachel Deline finished first overall in 15:07 to lead the CU women to dual meet wins over UNC Wilmington and Winthrop on Saturday morning in the Campbell Invitational.
The women's championship was competed on a four-kilometer course.
Following Deline was a pack of Campbell runners in the fourth through sixth overall positions. Samantha Robbins finished fourth overall and second on the Campbell squad with a time of 15:28. Laura Verschuren (fifth overall, 15:35) finished just ahead of Ashley Matthews (sixth overall, 15:38), and Siera Hagl completed the scoring when she crossed the finish line at 15:50 to take eighth overall.
In the dual meet team results, Campbell defeated UNCW by finishing with 16 points to the Seahawks' 45 points. The Camels finished with 23 points in the head-to-head matchup with Winthrop, besting the Eagles, who finished with 34 points.
On the men's side, UNC Wilmington's Wil Zahorodny took first-place individual honors, crossing the finish line at 16:04. Campbell junior DeLohnni Nicol-Samuel finished third overall and first on the Camel squad with a time of 16:16. Sophomores Morgan Timiney (16:36) and Eric Baldwin (16:38) would finish soon after in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Finishing fourth for CU and 13th overall was Chris Schulist, who crossed the line in 16:52, just before teammate Evan Darm (14th overall, 16:55).
The men's team results were compiled in dual meet fashion. Campbell defeated UNCW head-to-head by finishing with 26 points to the Seahawks' 29 points. Winthrop edged out the Camels as the Eagles finished with 25 points to CU's 30 points.
The Campbell cross country teams return to the course on Sep. 9 when they travel to Wilmington, N.C. to take part in the UNCW Seahawk Invitational.
