Preseason Big South Volleyball Poll Released

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  – The Campbell University volleyball team was picked to finish seventh in the Big South Preseason Coaches' Poll, the league announced today. The Camels finished the 2011 season with a 13-18 record and a mark of 6-8 in league play in the first season in the conference since the 1993 season.

Liberty led the conference with 99 points and nine first place votes. The Flames were last season's regular season and conference tournament champion. Radford received the other first place vote and racked up 78 points to earn second. Winthrop took third with 74 points. UNC Asheville was fourth with 59 points. High Point took fifth with 56 points. Coastal Carolina was sixth just ahead of Campbell with 53 points. Presbyterian placed eighth with 45 points, Gardner-Webb was ninth with 28 points and Charleston Southern rounded out the poll with 11 points.

Liberty's Loren Thomas, a senior middle blocker, was the voted the conference's preseason player of the year. Liberty placed a pair of players on the preseason all-conference team in Thomas and outside hitter Lillie Happel. Winthrop also had a duo on the list in setter Stephanie Deininger and libero Catherine Brusie. Presley Mabrey (Presbyterian), Emma Deininger (Radford), Courtney Johnk (High Point) and Jamie Dimaggio (Coastal Carolina) were also able to round out the list and garner preseason all-conference honors.

The Camels return three starters and eight letterwinners this year from the 2011 team highlighted by senior Kelsey Marek, redshirt junior Chelsey Pachoud and juniors Lindsey Coats and Heather Wilson.

Campbell starts its season on Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. against East Carolina in the East Carolina Classic in Greenville, N.C. The first CU home match is set for Sept. 21 in a conference matchup against High Point at 7 p.m. at the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center.
