Volleyball Falls at Charlotte, 3-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-Bianca Rouse and Leah Leventhal registered 20 kills apiece to lead Charlotte past Campbell 3-1 (25-23, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22) on day one of the Hilton University 49er Invitational.

Charlotte moves to 4-3 on the year with the win, while the Camels fall to 3-6 overall.

Rouse, a junior outside hitter, added 12 digs and four aces, while Leventhal, a senior outside hitter, tacked on seven digs and two blocks. Senior setter Sheri Davis added 47 assists, nine kills and seven digs, while sophomore libero Christina Drake posted a match-high 24 digs.

Leading the Camels was junior outside hitter Jordan Reaves with 14 kills and 10 digs. The Holly Springs, N.C. native added two aces to go along with her third double-double of the season. Lindsey Coats and Annie Kobeski posted six kills apiece with four and three blocks, respectively.

Sophomore setter Heather Wilson posted 26 assists, seven digs and four blocks, and Chelsey Pachoud tallied 12 digs.

Tied at 10-all in the first set, the Camels built a 4-1 run on three 49er errors and a Kelsey Campbell kill. Charlotte then rallied to tie the set at 16-all, and race to a 23-18 lead with a 12-4 spurt. Four Charlotte errors plus a Lindsey Coats kill then knotted the match again at 23-all. A Leventhal kill followed by a CU error sealed the 25-23 win for the 49ers.

Rouse powered Charlotte to a 25-16 win in the second frame with eight kills on nine attempts, while Campbell posted five total kills along with five errors in the set.

The 49ers led 18-15 late in the third stanza, but sparked by a Jessica Groen kill, the Camels rallied for a 10-5 run to win the set, 25-23. Chelsey Pachoud posted a pair of aces in the Camels' set-clinching run, while Charlotte committed five errors. Annie Kobeski clinched the set win with one of her six kills.

The teams battled throughout the fourth set, knotting the score 14 times in the frame with seven combined lead changes. Tied for the final time at 17, Leventhal fired another kill to give the 49ers the lead. Clinging to a 23-21 lead, Rouse recorded one of her seven kills in the set, aiding the 25-22 Charlotte win.

The Camels will continue play in the Hilton University 49er Invitational tomorrow from Halton Arena, taking on Furman at 10 a.m. and Morgan State at 4:30 p.m.
