Volleyball Travels to Charlotte Tourney
BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Coming off a 3-0 home win over UNC Wilmington, Campbell travels to Charlotte this weekend for the Hilton University 49er Invitational.
The Camels will face the host 49ers in their opener on Friday at 7 p.m. Campbell will also take on Furman and Morgan State on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
Campbell is 3-5 on the season and has posted a 2-5 record in tournament play, taking part in the NC Central Hilton RTP Tournament and the NC State Raleigh Midtown Classic.
Junior outside hitter Jordan Reaves leads the Camels at 2.76 kills and 2.64 digs per set, posting 19 kills and 13 digs for her second double-double of the season in Campbell's win over UNCW Tuesday night.
Sophomore Lindsey Coats added seven kills and two blocks, while freshman Lorin Thomas tallied six kills and four blocks in the win over the Seahawks. Coats' recorded a career-best attack percentage of .400 with her 7-1-15 clip. Annie Kobeski added five blocks, while Kelsey Campbell and Ally Russo combined for 23 digs. Sophomore setter Heather Wilson, meanwhile, dished out 31 assists with eight digs and three kills.
Wilson averages 7.11 assists while Kobeski totals 1.42 kills and 0.79 blocks per set for the Camels. Freshman Mallorie Cubillos and senior Kelsey Campbell add 2.81 and 2.67 digs a frame.
The Camels' first opponent in the two-day tournament, Charlotte, is 3-3 on the year after dropping two of three at the Lipscomb Invitational in Nashville, Tenn. The 49ers took losses to Arkansas State and Lipscomb before edging Tennessee State in the finale.
Junior outside hitter Bianca Rouse paces the 49ers at 3.19 kills and 1.81 digs per set, already with two 20-plus kill matches this season. Sophomore middle Amanda Videmsek also records 2.85 kills and 0.77 blocks per set, while senior setter Sheri Davis gathers 8.50 assists. Christina Drake, a sophomore defensive specialist, tacks on 2.71 digs per set.
Furman is 4-3 through a tough schedule so far this season. The Paladins have defeated Wisconsin, Florida Gulf Coast, Charleston Southern and Presbyterian, while falling to Duke, UCF and Southern California.
Junior outside hitter Chandler Ambrester collects 3.12 kills and 3.24 digs per set to lead Furman, while Kelly Kirby, Natalie Braun and Caroline Adams all add at least 2.40 kills a frame apiece. Braun, another junior outside hitter, also notches 3.04 digs a set with senior defensive specialist Carolyn Nicoletti leading the Paladins in the category at 4.24.
Morgan State has dropped four in a row since winning its first two contests and stands at 2-4 on the year. The Bears fell in all three of their matches in last weekend's Battle of Baltimore.
Freshman outside hitter Nangeeshie Plaud registers 2.42 kills and 2.08 digs per set to lead the Bears, while junior outside Ashley Johnson tacks on 2.20 kills. Kierra Outlin and Erin Cox gather 3.82 and 3.64 digs per set, respectively, for Morgan State. Sophomore setter Natalie Chafeh adds 6.95 assists and 1.68 digs a frame.
Up next for the Camels will be a trip to Durham, N.C. to face Duke on Tuesday, Sep. 13. Campbell will then head to the Elon Phoenix Classic, taking on Elon and NC Central.
