Volleyball Blanks UNCW, 3-0
BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Jordan Reaves fired off a season-high 19 kills to lead Campbell past UNC Wilmington 3-0 (26-24, 26-24, 25-23) in the Camels' 2011 home opener Tuesday night inside the Pope Center.
Campbell moves to 3-5 on the season, while UNCW falls to 3-4 overall. The win was the first for the Camels over UNCW since 2006, breaking a three-match win streak for the Seahawks in the series.
Reaves, a junior from Holly Springs, N.C., collected her 19 scores off 51 attempts with only four miscues, hitting at a .294 rate. The outside hitter also added 13 digs to complete her second double-double of the season.
Sophomore Lindsey Coats added seven kills and two blocks, while freshman Lorin Thomas tallied six kills and four blocks in the win. Coats' recorded a career-best attack percentage of .400 with her 7-1-15 clip.
Sophomore right side hitter Christi Laite paced UNCW with 15 kills and a pair of blocks, while Morgan Kline and Emily Mohrman notched seven kills apiece. Kline added 10 digs with Mohrman posting four blocks.
Sophomore libero Haley Collins gathered a match-high 19 digs in the loss, while junior outside hitter Jennifer Mallard totaled 16 digs and five kills.
In the opening set, the teams combined for 16 tie scores and nine lead changes. Still knotted at 24-all, Reaves put down one of her seven first set kills to give CU a 25-24 lead. At set point, a UNCW attack error sealed the 26-24 win for the Camels.
UNCW built an early 7-2 lead in the second stanza, but a 10-5 Campbell run, capped by a Chelsey Pachoud ace tied the frame at 12-all. That ace came in the middle of a 7-0 spurt for the Camels where Reaves added another pair of scores to give Campbell a 15-12 advantage. Clawing back, however, UNCW again knotted the set at 24-all with a kill from Kline. Two-straight UNCW errors, though, gave the Camels another 26-24 win to move up 2-0 in the match.
The third set featured 14 more ties and six lead changes, but the Camels hit .361 (16-3-36) as a unit, led by Reaves' eight kills, including match point, to clip the Seahawks 25-23.
The Camels will return to action this weekend at the Charlotte Invitational. Campbell will meet the 49ers, plus Furman and Morgan State in the two-day tournament, Sep. 9-10.
