Western Carolina Tops Camels, 3-0

RALEIGH, N.C.-Brittany Lysik dished out 35 assists and Caitlin Piechota posted 13 kills to lead Western Carolina over Campbell 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-20) in the NC State Raleigh Midtown Classic Friday night inside Reynolds Coliseum. 

WCU moves to 2-3 on the season, while Campbell falls to 2-4.

Lysik, a senior setter, added eight digs and three aces, while Piechota, a freshman outside hitter, tacked on a pair of aces and three digs. Carrie Minogue and Addy George both added nine kills apiece in the win for the Catamounts.

Lindsey Coats, Annie Kobeski and Jordan Reaves all recorded four kills, a team-high for Campbell. Freshman defensive specialist Mallorie Cubillos gathered 18 digs and sophomore setter Heather Wilson totaled 16 assists in the loss.

Tied at 12-all in the first set, WCU rallied for a 10-2 run to command a 22-14 advantage over the Camels. The Catamounts took the opening frame 25-19 behind Caitlin Piechota's six kills in the frame. Annie Kobeski and Jordan Reaves tallied three apiece for CU.

Western Carolina led the second set from wire to wire, hitting .393 (15-4-28) as a unit while Campbell posted just a -.040 (4-5-25) clip. Carrie Minogue posted five scored in the set as the Catamounts took a 25-10 win.

Trailing 10-4 early in the third, Campbell cut the deficit to just a pair at 12-10, but WCU pushed its advantage back to six by match point and claimed a 25-20.

The Camels will be back in action tomorrow at the NC State Classic, closing out the tourney with the host Wolfpack at 7 p.m. The Camels were originally slated to meet North Carolina A&T at 2 p.m., but the Aggies pulled out of the tournament due to injuries, not being able to field a full team on the court.
