FGCU Defeats Camels, 3-1
DURHAM, N.C.- Florida Gulf Coast used 12 aces and Brittany Muse registered 17 kills to down Campbell 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 19-25, 16-25), handing the Camels their first loss in the NC Central Hilton RTP Tournament Friday night inside McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium.
FGCU and Campbell are both 1-1 on the season after splitting on day one of the tournament.
Junior outside hitter Jordan Reaves paced the Camels with 10 kills and nine digs in the loss. Ally Russo, another junior outside, registered eight kills and two digs in her CU debut, while Kelsey Marek gathered five kills. Kelsey Campbell hauled in 12 digs to pace the Camels defensively, and sophomore setter Heather Wilson chipped in 26 assists.
Muse added three digs and two blocks for the Eagles, while Jill Hopper tallied 12 kills and 10 digs. Freshman setter Gigi Meyer collected 40 assists, a match-high. Whitney Masters and Liga Strautniece, meanwhile, posted seven digs each.
After stretching their lead to five at 22-17 in the first stanza, Campbell held the pace, taking a 25-20 win on a Jordan Reaves tip that fell for a kill. Six different Camels recorded kills in the opening frame win, as the unit hit .474 (11-2-19).
After leading 13-8 in the second set following a Kobeski block, FGCU trimmed the advantage down to two, 14-12, on a 4-1 streak. Still leading 20-18, FGCU posted a 4-0 run to claim the 22-20 lead. The Eagles would even up the match at 1-all with a 25-21 win.
FGCU claimed another win in set three behind Hopper's five kills and Strautniece's three aces, putting the Eagles up 2-1 with the 25-19 win.
The Eagles pulled ahead early in the fourth set, 11-3, before Campbell made a surge, bringing the deficit down to four at 14-10. From there, however, an 11-6 FGCU run closed out the set and the match, giving the Eagles a 3-1 victory.
Campbell will be back in action tomorrow at the NCCU Hilton RTP Tournament, facing Hampton at 11 a.m., followed by Elon at 5 p.m.
