Women’s Tennis Falls at UNCG, 6-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Campbell women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision on Saturday afternoon at UNC Greensboro. Freshman Ana Maria Ortiz (Betera, Spain) notched the lone singles win for the Camels.

Falling to 1-4 on the season was Campbell , while UNCG improved to 1-1 overall.

The doubles competition started off the afternoon as the Spartans took the win at No. 3. Sophomore Tamara Stanic (Budva, Montenegro) and junior Natasha Afridi (Tokyo, Japan) were topped by Niltooli Wilkins and Alex Whitehead, 8-4, at the No. 1 slot. The third slot was the most competitive as freshmen Ewa Telenga (Arden, N.C.) and Lauren Vaughn (Arden, N.C.) fought hard, but ultimately fell to Amy Ellis and Jamie Grinberg.

With the Spartans ahead 1-0 in the contest, Stephanie Falcon, Kayla  Gammie and Wilkins notched straight-set wins to take a decisive 4-0 lead. Ortiz picked up her third singles win of the season, 6-4, 6-2 by knocking off Dilaria Yurtkuran.

At No. 4, senior Lourdes Ros (Greensboro, N.C.) was unable to take a first-set tiebreaker and Annette Rios ended up taking the second frame, 6-0.

The fight for the Camels continued at No. 3 with Telenga taking the second set, 6-3, against Whitehead. UNCG ended up taking the super-tiebreaker by a 10-3 score.

The Camels are back in action on Friday at N.C. Central with the match set to start at 2 p.m. Campbell plays its first home contest of the spring on Feb. 28 against Liberty.
