Camels Find Success in Singles at Wake Forest Invitational

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Campbell women's tennis team posted an even 8-8 singles mark at the Wake Forest Invitational at the WFU Tennis Center. Junior Karolina Chernaya (Tashkent, Uzbekistan), sophomore Tamara Stanic (Budva, Montenegro), and Ewa Telenga (Gliwice, Poland) each posted 2-1 records in singles play.

Starting off in Flight A was Cernaya with back-to-back victories over Andrea Crespo of Stetson, 6-4, 6-4 and Kasey Gardiner of Wake Forest, 6-4, 6-1. She dropped a match to Niolli Wil, 6-1, 6-1 and Christine Newman of College of Charleston, 6-1, 6-1 to finish fourth.

In Flight C, Stanic posted a round of 16 victory over Xue Zhang of Wake Forest, 6-4, 6-1. She dropped a tough 7-6 (3), 6-4 match to Mandy Brown of Louisville before taking a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Salma Dahbi of East Tenn. St., 6-4, 6-1.

Telenga saw success in Flight W with a first round win over Ginny Johnson of UNC Charlotte, 6-1, 6-1, which occurred prior to a loss to Soumeya Anane of UNCG, 6-3, 6-1. A consolation victory over Gaby Celi of Appalachian State, 6-3, 6-1 rounded out the bracket.

Freshman Ana Marie Ortiz (Betera, Spain) and junior Natasha Afridi (Tokyo, Japan) each posted a win in Flights B and E, respectively.

The round-robin doubles tournament was tough for the Ortiz/Stanic team in Flight A, but Chernaya/Afridi were able to secure two consolation victories for the Camels over Winter/Antill of Navy, 8-5 and Cox/King of Appalachian State, 8-3.

Campbell is back in action on Oct. 18-21 at the ITA Carolina Regional in Winston-Salem, N.C.
