Women’s Tennis Faces Charleston Southern in Big South Quarterfinal Thursday

BUIES CREEK – Following its 2-6 conference record (11-7 overall) Campbell has earned the seven seed in this weekend's Big South Tennis Championships and will face the two seed Charleston Southern in the quarterfinals Thursday at 1:30 pm. The tournament will be hosted by UNC Asheville and will be played at the Asheville Downtown Racquet Club South in Asheville, N.C.

2012 Regular Season

Campbell finished the regular season riding a two match winning streak, concluding with a non-conference win over Charlotte on Friday. The Camels picked up two conference wins over Presbyterian, and UNC Asheville. They also earned nine non-conference victories, highlighted by wins over in-state rivals East Carolina and Davidson.

Karolina Chernaya, Tamara Stanic, and Natasha Afridi led the Camels this season with in the top three singles positions. Chernaya finished the regular season at 12-6, Stanic at 11-7, and Afridi at 12-4. Stanic was also named Big South Player of the Week on February 28.

April 6 against Charleston Southern

The Camels fell to Charleston Southern 5-2 on April 6 in Buies Creek. Afridi and Anais Gomar picked up singles victories for the Camels in the two and six spots. Olga Makhova led the Buccaneers with her win in the one spot.

The Rest of the Big South

Winthrop finished the season with an 8-0 Conference record to garner the Big South Women's Tennis Regular-Season Championship, it was announced today by the League office. For the second consecutive year, the Eagles earned the No. 1 seed in next week's Big South Women's Tennis Championship.

Charleston Southern finished second with a 7-1 record, while Coastal Carolina picked up the No. 3 seed.  Radford, Gardner-Webb and Liberty finished Conference play with identical 4-4 records. In the tiebreaker procedure, the Highlanders claimed the No. 4 seed, while the Runnin' Bulldogs took the No. 5 seed and the Flames landed the No. 6 spot. UNC Asheville's 0-8 Conference mark was good for the No. 8 position. 

If the Camels knock off the Buccaneers on Thursday they would advance to take on the winner of the Coastal Carolina / Liberty quarterfinal match Friday at 1:00 pm. The Big South's tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Women's Tennis Tournament.  The Conference Championship schedule is as follows:
