DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Campbell University women's tennis team began its fall season this past weekend at the Davidson Invitational. Karolina Chernaya took home second place in the flight one bracket while Dominik Wallaart, Anais Gomar, and Lourdes Ros earned singles victories for the Camels.
The invitational was a flight championship for both singles and doubles with each flight carrying a weighted point system. The top flight, No. 1, carried eight points and went all the way down to flight No. 8, which carried one point. In doubles it was the top flight, No. 1, carrying four points all the way down to the No. 4 spot, which was worth one point.
Chernaya began the tournament with two straight set victories over Danielle Terpko of East Carolina (6-0, 7-5) and Stephani Synn of Davidson (6-4, 6-2). She lost her final singles match to eventual bracket champion Tooli Wilkins of UNC Greensboro (5-7, 2-6).
Gomar won her first match of the fall season over Kathrine Dicconson of Davidson (6-1, 6-0) in the flight four bracket.
Wallaart took home third place in the flight five bracket by defeating Catherine Wood of Davidson (6-2, 6-4). In the flight six bracket, Ros won third place after beating Frizzi Bschorer of Davidson (7-5, 7-5).
Chernaya and Borislava Nikolova earned second place in the flight one doubles bracket. The duo defeated Synn and Nisha Crouser of Davidson (9-8) and Terpko and Neena Wanko of ECU (8-3).
Wallaart and newcomer Kateryna Yegoreychenko earned their first doubles victory of the fall season. The duo defeated Manon Bissat and Dana Gray of ECU (9-8) in the flight two doubles bracket.
The Camels continue their fall schedule September 30, at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston – Salem N.C.
