Clinton, S.C. - Campbell's women's soccer team traveled to Clinton, S.C. to face Presbyterian as a Big South Conference member for the first time on Saturday evening and finished with a 2-2 draw. The Blue Hose jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Camels rallied with goals in the late first half and early second half to climb even.
Presbyterian wasted no time getting the offense in gear, scoring in the fifth minute as Gracie Boswell found the back of the net for the third time this year. Emily Boggus added a goal in the 21st minute as the Blue Hose took a 2-0 advantage.
Campbell got on the scoreboard five minutes later when Pirjo Leppikangas (Helsinki, Finland) scored her eighth goal of the season off an assist from Ashley Clark (Cary, N.C.). Leppikangas moves into tenth place in Campbell's record books for most points in a single season, securing her 21st point in 2011 with tonight's goal.
Ashley Clark pulled CU even at the 63:09 mark, taking a pass from Kirsty Meyer and finishing for her ninth goal of the season. Clark also continues to rise up the team single season record charts, now in a tie for seventh in goals scored (nine) and eighth overall in points scored (23).
Campbell outshot Presbyterian 17-3 after the first half, but could not find a game-winning goal. PC goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anders finished with 14 saves, tied for the most by a Big South goalie this season (with VMI's Amanda Berrios). Camel keeper Ryann Torrero (Burbank, Calif.) had six saves in the match.
"We are obviously pleased that our team fought back after giving up two soft goals. We clearly need to come into our next contest more focused if we want to achieve our long-term goal of winning the confernce," head coach Todd Clark said.
With the first tie of the season, CU now stands at 9-3-1 overall, 3-0-1 in Big South Conference play. The Camels will travel to High Point on Thursday night for a 7:00 p.m. match against the Panthers.
