Camels top Winthrop 4-1 on road
Rock Hill, S.C. - Pirjo Leppikangas scored her fourth goal of the week to help lead the Camels to a 4-1 road victory over the Winthrop Eagles on Saturday night. The senior from Helsinki, Finland scored the game-winning goal for the second consecutive match, both Big South Conference contests.
CU got on the board in the 25th minute when redshirt junior Kirsty Meyer (Fredericksburg, Va.) headed home a deflected ball off of Ashley Clark's (Cary, N.C.) corner kick. The goal was Meyer's fourth of the season.
Less than five minutes later, Leppikangas scored the eventual game-winner on a fast break that saw Hilliary Gupton (McKinney, Texas) play a ball ahead to Clark, who quickly touched a pass to a streaking Leppikangas. The Camels took the 2-0 advantage into halftime.
Campbell pushed the lead to 3-0 in the 61st minute as Clark notched her seventh goal of the season off an assist from Meyer.
The Camels held a narrow 17-16 advantage in shots, but Winthrop was only able to convert on its opportunity in the 86th minute, when Courtney Durbin took a shot that deflected off a defender and slid past Camel goalkeeper Ryann Torrero (Burbank, Calif.). Torrero finished with five saves, and just missed securing her fifth shutout.
With eight seconds remaining in the match, CU freshman Michelle Procaccini (Olney, Md.) intercepted a pass from the Eagle goalkeeper who had drifted far off her line. Procaccini booted a shot over the head of the retreating goalkeeper that drifted into the left side of the net for the freshman's second goal of the season.
CU moves to 8-3 overall, 2-0 in the Big South Conference. "Overall, it was a great, balanced week for us," head coach Todd Clark said. "To score seven goals in our first two BSC games and to do it with the balanced scoring we have is very exciting." Campbell returns to action on Thursday night when the team hosts UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
