Camels top Jaguars to finish 2-0 at Crusader Classic

Valparaiso, Ind. – Campbell defeated IUPUI 2-1 on Sunday afternoon to leave the Crusader Classic with two victories heading into Big South Conference play. With the win, CU takes the Crusader Classic title by posting a perfect 2-0 record. The Camels complete the non-conference portion of the schedule 6-3 overall, improving from last year's 4-4-1 non-league slate. IUPUI falls to 1-6-3 on the year.

Campbell red-shirt junior captain Kirsty Meyer (Fredericksburg, Va.) got the scoring started in the first half, taking a long pass from sophomore Hilliary Gupton (McKinney, Texas) and converting her third goal of the season at the 23:33 mark. CU carried the 1-0 advantage into halftime, with both teams recording eight shots in the opening half.

Camel freshman Ashley Clark scored for the second consecutive match in what turned out to be the game-winner (her fourth of the year) in the 58th minute. Clark now has six goals and two assists on the season, and her 14 points lead the Big South Conference. Clark and Meyer each finished with four shots during Sunday's contest, accounting for half of the team's total production in that category.

IUPUI would cut Campbell's lead to one goal just five minutes after Clark had given CU a 2-0 lead when Alicia Brock dribbled into the box and converted a shot to the far post for her second goal of the season.

CU goalkeeper Ryann Torrero picked up six saves to secure the victory for Campbell. The red-shirt junior from Burbank, Calif. now holds a 1.21 goals against average in 2011.

"I think IUPUI is a far better team than their record," head coach Todd Clark said about today's opponent who suffered its third setback by a lone goal. "All in all it was a great trip.  We closed out the non-conference portion of our schedule with two wins over teams very similar to those we'll face in the Big South. We are enjoying this result while we begin to consider the very important game ahead of us on Thursday."

The Camels will return home for the conference opener on Thursday night when the team will play host to Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m. The CU Marketing and Promotions department will be giving out free white t-shirts to the first 100 fans through the gates for the special "White-Out" night as Campbell returns to the Big South Conference.
