Valparaiso, Ind. – Line Berntsen scored the first goal of her collegiate career with five minutes remaining in regulation to lead Campbell to a 3-2 win over the host Valparaiso University on Friday night in the Crusader Classic. The Camels survived when Valpo's Becky Clever lined a shot that hit the crossbar with five seconds remaining.
The Crusaders jumped out in front in the 23rd minute when Rachel Hoaglin scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Hoaglin sent a ball to the upper corner of the goal off of a free kick to give Valpo the 1-0 lead.
Campbell took advantage of a penalty kick opportunity after the Crusaders were whistled for a hand ball inside the box. Senior captain Annabelle Gibney recorded her third goal of the season when she placed her penalty kick attempt perfectly in the bottom right corner of the net, sending the game to halftime tied at one.
CU pushed everyone forward to start the second half, and it paid off quickly as Ashley Clark found the back of the net forty seconds into the period. The goal was Clark's fifth of the season, with the assist going to Hilliary Gupton.
Valpo refused to back down as the Crusaders climbed back level in the 75th minute on Brooke Henderson's equalizer. Henderson collected a deflection at the top of the box with her back to the goal and made an athletic move, turning and firing a shot past Camel goalkeeper Ryann Torrero's left hand.
The teams continued to exchange scoring opportunities until Line Berntsen netted her first goal of the season in the 84th minute in what proved to be the game-winner. Gibney added to her points total with an assist on the goal.
"Anytime you beat a team on their home ground, it is a win to be please with," head coach Todd Clark said. "I think Valpo is very well-coached and has several solid veterans on their roster."
Campbell improves to 5-3 overall with the victory and will face IUPUI on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. in the team's final non-conference match of the year. The Camels ended Valpo's four-match unbeaten streak, sending the Crusaders to 5-4-1 on the year. Valpo will face Air Force in Sunday's Crusader Classic finale at 2:30 p.m.
