Camels take 2-0 victory over SCSU
BUIES CREEK – A pair of goals from freshman forwards helped lead the Camels to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Bulldogs of South Carolina State on Friday evening. Ashley Clark scored her fourth goal of the season (third game-winner) and Gia Casaburo notched her first collegiate goal in the home triumph.
CU got on the board early when Clark took a cross from Caitlin Schneider (Southlake, Texas) and found the back of the net in the 13th minute to vault her to the top of the goals scored charts in the Big South Conference. The Panther Creek High School product now has ten points (four goals and two assists) in her rookie season.
Campbell controlled the pace of play in the first half, out-shooting SCSU 8-3. The Camels would hold the 1-0 lead throughout the remainder of the first half and for much of the second period.
CU had a good chance to score an insurance goal in the 72nd minute when Lauren Kuklenski (Colorado Springs, Colo.) got a touch off a corner kick, but Bulldog goalkeeper Danielle Murphy (El Dorado, Calif.) made one of her five saves on the night.
Briea Pierce (Toronto, Canada) led the offensive attack for the Bulldogs, finishing with three shots. SCSU outshot Campbell 5-4 in the second half and put five shots on goal during the contest. Ryann Torrero (Burbank, Calif.) made five saves for CU and preserved her fourth shutout of the season.
Casaburo put the game away when she played a ball from Alexis Prada (Olney, Md.) and fired a shot past the keeper at the 88:26 mark to give Campbell the final 2-0 margin of victory.
"Anytime you come off the hype of playing two ranked opponents, the next game is going to be difficult," coach Todd Clark said about his team's play. "I felt we lacked focus tonight and South Carolina State was a difficult team for us to face. I feel like they are a solid, well-coached team."
The Camels have now outscored their opponents 14-6 in 2011, including a 5-0 advantage at the Eakes Athletic Complex on campus. "By far the most important statistic tonight is that we remain unbeaten and un-scored upon at home," Clark said.
Campbell improves to 4-2 overall and will have a week off to prepare for next Friday's game against Towson University. First kick is slated for 7 p.m. as the Camels look to defend the home pitch once again. SCSU falls to 1-3-1 and will next be in action on Wednesday when they host The Citadel at 7 p.m.
