Campbell Rebounds at Home in 2-1 OT Win Against Winthrop

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Turnabout was fair play for the Campbell women, as they used an own goal 3:44 into the first overtime period to defeat Winthrop 2-1, after falling to UNC Wilmington on a late own goal during a midweek match. The win takes the Camels to 2-3-0 while the Lady Eagles fall to 2-3-0.
The win ends a three game skid for the Camels and also marks the first time in three matches that the team has out shot an opponent, as the Camels hit 16 shots to Winthrop's five.
The Eagles took the lead in the match at the 52:55 mark, when freshman Chelsea White scored her third goal of the season. The Swanton, Ohio native headed home a cross from senior defender Michael Sonefeld past goalkeeper Ashley Pate who had come on to replace and injured Samar Azem earlier in the match.
Allie Frakes had the answer for the Camels less than a minute later, as the Richardson, Texas native headed home her first career goal for the Camels. Frakes, a freshman, came forward from her central marking back position to head home a cornerkick from junior Christina Candeloro 53:53 into the match.
The two teams played close for the rest of regulation. Winthrop goalkeeper Dimitra Poulos had an important foot save in the 65th minute to deny Campbell's Danielle Mandela from inside the penalty area.
The Eagles nearly took the game in the 90th when freshman midfielder Erin Foote took a quick free kick from just over 25 yards out that caught the Camels off-guard and rattled off the crossbar.
In overtime it was a third set piece goal in the match as Candeloro's corner kick drifted in towards the Lady Eagle goal and was put into the net by a Winthrop defender.
The Camels will play next at East Carolina on Friday at 4:00 p.m. The Lady Eagles return home to take on Samford Monday in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
