Spartanburg, S.C. – Redshirt senior John Weakley (Cleveland, Ohio) has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week of competition from January 25-31. Weakley finished last week with a 3-0 individual record.
On Jan. 26, Weakley earned a 13-4 major decision victory over Duke's Brian Self to help lead the Camels to a 19-17 dual win over the Blue Devils. The win was the first for the CU program over an ACC opponent since the 2001-02 season.
The Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy product then took two more individual wins on Jan. 28, including a 4-2 decision over Old Dominion's Joe Budi and a 13-6 triumph over Navy's Paul Rands.
The 3-0 mark last week moves Weakley to 21-7 at 197 pounds for the Fighting Camels this season, with six pins, one tech fall and four major decisions to his credit. He also picked up a forfeit win in the heavyweight class, giving him a 22-7 overall record.
Weakley is the third Camel to win the weekly SoCon honor this season. Nick Rex (Lakeland, Fla.) was named the conference Wrestler of the Week on Nov. 30, while Mark Hartenstine (Easton, Penn.) took the accolade on Dec. 14.
