Wrestling opens 2011-12 season on Saturday with three matches, including a pair against ACC nationally-ranked squads

BUIES CREEK – The Campbell University wrestling team will open its 2011-12 slate with three matches on Saturday. The Fighting Camels will compete against the University of Virginia and Anderson University at the Cavalier Duals in Charlottesville, Va. on Saturday morning, before traveling to Salem, Va. to take on the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday evening.

Both Virginia and Virginia Tech are ranked in the top-25 nationally in the latest NWCA/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Cavaliers are ranked 22nd, while the Hokies are currently 14th in the poll. "It's been a great pre-season and we're really excited to travel to Virginia to start the regular season," head coach Joe Boardwine said.

"We know that Virginia and Virginia Tech both have very deep and experienced dual meet teams. That's why we are wrestling them. We want that challenge and we want the opportunity to test ourselves and see how much progress the program is making. Virginia Tech finished second in the nation at the NWCA National Duals last year, and Virginia has probably seven or eight returning athletes who have been past NCAA qualifiers."

Prior to Campbell's 10:30 a.m. match against the Cavaliers, the Camels will take on Anderson at 9 a.m. in the season's opening match. "Our series with Anderson is a regional rivalry," Boardwine said. "It's important that we start winning that match consistently."

"We have an extremely young team and will probably be starting six or seven freshmen out of our ten weight classes. That type of inexperience can sometimes catch up to you in a weekend like this. However, I think the team is very hungry for the opportunity to make a name for ourselves this season. We have made sure that they have done everything within their power to prepare to compete at a high level this weekend. I'm looking forward to seeing how the team will react to this environment."

The neutral site match against Virginia Tech will take place at the Salem Civic Center (1001 Roanoke Boulevard; Salem, VA 24153-5207) beginning at 5 p.m. Projected line-ups for Saturday's matches are posted below.
