Wrestling Splits at NC State Duals

RALEIGH, N.C.-Freshman heavyweight Khiry Reid led the way with a pair of victories as Campbell wrestling gained a split at the NC State Duals. The Camels were victorious over Anderson by a 22-15 decision after falling just short against the Wolfpack, 25-24.

The Camels improve to 1-4 on the year, while the Trojans fall to 3-7 and NC State to 3-4. The Wolfpack won both of their events on the day, also downing Anderson by a 36-17 score.

In the first match of the day, the Camels started off at 125 with a CJ Gittens win over NC State's Dan Brumfield by a score of 9-3. After four consecutive Wolfpack wins including a Darrius Little major decision and a Kody Hamrah pin, senior 165 pounder Steve Wiktorek fought back for the Camels with a pin of Quinton Godley. The fall at the 1:41 mark trimmed the NC State lead to 19-9.

Following a Jake Burge pin at the 174 weight class, the Camels obtained two victories via forfeit to pull within a 25-21 score heading into the final bout. In that bout, Reid was able to defeat Bobby Isola, 4-2, leaving Campbell one point shy of its opponent's total.

In the Camels' second meeting at the duals, CU grabbed their first win of the season. In a back and forth match, the Campbell grapplers managed victories in four of the first six matches, all by decision, giving the Camels a 12-6 advantage with three bouts remaining.

Following a John Hamrick pin and a Luis Audelo decision, 197 pound sophomore Parker Burns was able to wrestle his way to a major decision over Zach Anderson to give his team a 16-15 edge, setting up for another decisive heavyweight contest. Reid then sealed the victory with his pin of Jonah Adams at 6:33. Reid's second win of the day pushed the Camels to a 22-15 final score.

The Camels will now head to Millersville, Pa. next weekend for the Shorty Hitchcock Open on Jan. 10.
