BUIES CREEK, N.C. -- After capturing individual honors and leading Campbell to its fourth-straight team tournament victory, Maite Ortiz de Pinedo has been named Atlantic Sun Conference women's golfer of the month for February.
A junior from Valladolid, Spain, Ortiz de Pinedo won her second collegiate tournament crown Feb. 26-27 when CU claimed its own Fighting Camel Spring Classic at Keith Hills Country Club No. 1.
Ortiz de Pinedo claimed medalist honors with consecutive 74s on the par-72, 6012-yard Keith Hills layout. She earned a one stroke edge over High Point's Kate O'Sullivan, who shot plus-five 149.
Campbell's 605 team total set a new tournament 36-hole record, bettering the 609 that CU posted en route to the 1995 title. The Lady Camels won their home spring tournament for the 10th time in 15 tries and provided John Crooks with his 55th women's tournament coaching victory, seventh-most in NCAA Division I women's golf history.
Ortiz de Pinedo finished the 36-hole tournament with six birdies, second only to Gardner-Webb's Yayoi Garcia, who tied for 14th at 158 and made seven birds over two rounds. The Campbell junior ended the tourney at even-par on the eight par-3 holes, and one-under on par-fives.
Campbell, which has won four of its last five outings following Tuesday's fourth-place finish at the Pinehurst Challenge, returns to action next Monday-Wednesday at the UNLV Spring Invitational at Boulder City, Nev.
Ortiz de Pinedo is the third Camel golfer to earn the A-Sun's monthly honor this year following Alejandra Shaw (September) and Belen Diaz Cisneros (October).
