Lady Camels defeat UVA-Wise, 64-47
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell junior guard Kiera Gaines (Mechanicsville, Va.) tallied a career-high 18 rebounds, 11 points and seven assists in a 65-47 victory over UVA-Wise on Wednesday night at Gore Arena/John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center. A personal-best 11 points were registered by junior guard Summer Leverette (Turkey, N.C.), who became the sixth different player to pace the Lady Camels in scoring.
Campbell (7-2) held a decisive 38-12 advantage in the paint and out-rebounded UVA-Wise, 55-35. Gaines registered eight of the 21 offensive rebounds for the Lady Camels. She posted 18 rebounds and became the first player since Ashley Williamson, who reached that total against Coker on 11/15/08.
Five rebounds each were notched by senior forwards Ashley James (Round Rock, Texas) and Roslyn Presley (Petersburg, Va.), while junior forward Juli Osborne (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Leverette contributed four rebounds each.
Fourteen players made an appearance in the contest for the Lady Camels with 11 individuals reaching the scoresheet. Freshman forward Qua Brown (Hampton, Va.) made a free throw for her first point at Campbell.
The Lady Camels tallied a 39.4 pct. overall shooting pct., while making five three-point field goals at a 35.7 rate.
Campbell held UVA-Wise to 23.1 pct. from the floor. After the Cavaliers made five treys in the first half, the Lady Camels clamped down defensively, holding UVA-Wise to 0-10 from beyond the arc.
UVA-Wise was paced by MaKenzie Cluesman with 20 points on 5-of-16 from the field and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. The Cavaliers were led on the glass by Kayla Carey with six rebounds, while Makenzie Hensley added four blocks.
In the first half, UVA-Wise started the game going 3-for-5 from three-point range and the teams traded the lead a jumper by Leverette put the Lady Camels up for good, 16-14, with 7:17 remaining. Campbell went inside and owned the paint, holding a 24-2 point advantage in the frame.
Gaines had three fast break layups off of Cavalier turnovers, which helped the Lady Camels get into their offensive rhythm. She grabbed 12 rebounds and eight points before the break.
Moore drained a three-point field goal just prior to the halftime horn that stretched the lead to 33-44. The Lady Camels made 15-of-30 shots during the frame, but five three-point field goals by UVA-Wise kept the lead to just nine.
Campbell opened the second half with a 40-30 advantage in the first five minutes on a layup by Presley before the Cavaliers converted two free throws. A steal by Presley and ensuing fast break layup began an 11-0 for Campbell as it took a 32-51 lead, the largest of the game with 10:08 left.
Gaines brought her assist total to seven on a layup by Leverette with 6:18 remaining, 56-37. Coach Watkins went to the bench and enabled for juniors Casey Elliott (Wilson, N.C.) and Juli Osborne (Kingsport, Tenn.), sophomores Jewell Yarborough (Creedmoor, N.C.) and Jessica Pone (High Point, N.C.) and freshman Courtney Best (Raleigh, N.C.) to receivesome valuable playing time.
The contest was a scheduled exhibition for UVA-Wise.
Campbell concludes a stretch of three games in five days on Friday at Elon with the tip set for 7 p.m. The Lady Camels are back at home on Jan. 4 against conference-rival High Point at 1 p.m.
