Lady Camels pick up 56-45 win at N.C. Central
DURHAM, N.C. – Campbell improved to 6-2 on the year with a 56-45 victory at N.C. Central on Monday night inside McDouglad-McLendon Gym. Senior forward Roslyn Presley (Petersburg, Va.) paced the Lady Camels with 15 points, while 10 points were added by sophomore guard RaeChaun Edwards (Spring Grove, Va.).
Campbell made stop after stop down the stretch, limiting to the Eagles (4-4) to just one made field goal over the final seven minutes, which led to a 12-1 run. Both teams committed 19 turnovers, but a 39-32 advantage on the boards was important in securing the victory.
Sophomore guard Kiera Gaines (Mechanicsville, Va.) totaled 10 rebounds. Campbell grabbed 15 offensive boards that led to 14 second-chance points.
Campbell compiled a 38.5 overall shooting pct., while it held N.C. Central to 33.3 pct. Six three-point field goals were made by the Lady Camels as senior guard Jessica Moore (Jacksboro, Tenn.) sunk two of them.
Eight different Lady Camels made a jumper and 15 assists were tallied with Gaines leading the team with five. Edwards and Presley added four each.
An eight-point game was totaled by senior forward Ashley James (Round Rock, Texas), while junior D Janelle Brown (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and senior forward Heather Beadle (Austin, Texas) each made field goals.
N.C. Central was led by Racquel Davis with 16 points and nine rebounds, which included a 6-of-8 performance from the charity stripe. A total of 12 assists were registered by the Eagles on 16 made shots.
Nineteen turnovers were forced by both teams leading to 17 points for Campbell and 16 points for N.C. Central in transition. Each squad was credited with four steals as Gaines paced the contest with four.
After a slow start that saw seven turnovers combined in the first four minutes, Moore scored the first jumper for the Lady Camels with a made three pointer at 14:58, besides a free throw to tie the game at four. A three-point field goal by freshman forward Amanda Coffer (Summerfield, N.C.), who finished with five points, put the visitors on top, 9-5.
The teams traded the lead seven times, where each had a four-point advantage, while the contest was evened up on five occasions in the first half that ended 28-all.
Campbell spread its scoring around as seven different players made one of the team's 10 field goals. There were nine assists on those made jumpers, led by Presley and Edwards with three each.
A 10-2 run for the Lady Camels started the second half as Presley began it with by making the jumper in traffic and the foul shot. Moore nailed a pair of free throws and a trey to cap the run as the Eagles made their first bucket of the frame at 13:03, a layup by Morgan Jones.
NCCU cut Campbell lead to 44-43 with a made free throw by Davis, which capped a 6-0 spurt. Layups were converted by Edwards and Presley before a pair of free throw pushed the lead to seven.
Campbell held the Eagles to 17 second-half points on 6-of-22 from the field. Seven of the eight steals for the Lady Camels were tallied in the frame.
The Lady Camels return to Gore Arena/John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. contest against UVA-Wise. Campbell finishes up a three-game week on Friday at Elon with the tip set for 7 p.m.
