Women’s Basketball Downs Gardner-Webb 64-51
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.-Campbell reeled off an 18-4 second half run to sink Gardner-Webb 64-51 in the regular season finale for both teams Monday night at Paul Porter Arena.
Tonisha Baker paced Campbell with 25 points, nine rebounds, five assists and five steals in the win, her second consecutive game scoring 25 or more. Baker also notched a career-high 31 points with 10 boards in Campbell's win at UNC Asheville on Friday.
Campbell finishes the regular season at 18-11 overall and 11-7 in its first season back in the Big South. GWU falls to 4-25 on the year and 3-15 in conference play. Campbell's 18 wins are the most in a single season since 2000-01, when the team posted 22.
Campbell won its last four road games of the regular season.
The game marked Baker's fourth 20 point outing of the season and eighth in her career. The junior from High Point, N.C. is averaging 28.0 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4.0 steals per game over her last two contests.
Senior forward Katelyn Bass added 16 points and five rebounds for the Lady Camels in her 17th double figure scoring game of the season. Amanda O'Neill added seven points and seven rebounds, while Kate Cloxton posted five points, five assists and three steals. Kiera Gaines also scored five in the win.
Jasmine Dale and Catrina Green led GWU with 15 points apiece. Dale added three assists while Green recorded a team-high nine rebounds for the Bulldogs. Kiki Smith also scored eight, with Jessica Heilig registering eight boards and four points.
After taking a 29-23 lead into the halftime break, Campbell held just a one point advantage at the 14:08 mark of the second frame after a pair of Jasmine Dale free throws. Tonisha Baker then responded for the Lady Camels with a steal and layup, and Katelyn Bass piled on an 18-footer to put Campbell up 41-36.
Campbell took a 55-40 lead with 3:57 to play after the 18-4 run as Baker hit Katelyn Bass for another layup.
Gardner-Webb countered with a 9-1 spurt, trimming the Campbell lead to seven on a Catrina Green putback with 2:10 to go at 56-49, but the Lady Camels closed out the night with an 8-2 run, giving CU the 64-51 road win.
Down 6-5 in the early going, Campbell posted a 9-0 run, led by six from Katelyn Bass, to make it 14-5 Lady Camels after Bass' jumper from the elbow at the 13:37 mark. Campbell then stretched its lead to 12, 20-8, on a Kiera Gaines jumper with 10:12 on the clock.
Gardner-Webb then answered with a 14-5, pulling within three at 25-22 on a pair of Jasmine Dale free throws with 1:49 to play in the half.
A Baker layup followed by an Ashley James jumper cushioned the Lady Camels' advantage, giving Campbell a 29-23 lead at the break.
Campbell posted 26 points off 26 Bulldog turnovers, also holding a 16-0 advantage in fast break points. The Lady Camels limited an opponent to fewer than 60 points for the 16th time this season, improving to 15-1 in those games.
The Lady Camels will begin Big South Tournament play on Friday at 2 p.m. against Charleston Southern. Campbell, the tournament's No. 4 seed, will be facing the No. 5 Buccaneers. Campbell swept the season series against CSU 2-0, 70-56 at home (1/21/12) and 76-58 on the road (2/20/12). Full tournament pairings will be set following tonight's league games.
