Second Half Surge Lifts Lady Camels Over Presbyterian 68-44

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Four scored in double figures to lead Campbell past Presbyterian 68-44 Monday night at Gilbert Craig Gore Arena, closing out the Lady Camels' home slate for the 2011-12 season.

Campbell improves to 16-11 on the year and 9-7 in Big South play with the win, while PC falls to 12-15 overall and 6-10 in conference games.

With 16 wins, the Lady Camels secure their first winning season since 2001, with at least three games remaining on the schedule. Campbell also finishes its 2011-12 home schedule with a 10-3 record, recording the team's first double digit home win season since 2000-01, and its ninth overall.

CU is now 13-1 when surrendering under 60 points this season, and 7-0 when limiting the opposition below 50.

On senior night, Katelyn Bass led the way with 13 points and 11 rebounds, the senior forward's third-straight double-double and fourth this season. Bass has amassed 44 rebounds in her last three outings.

Junior guard Tonisha Baker also scored 13, adding five rebounds, five assists and four steals, while Jazmine Cooper, a junior post, notched 10 points and eight boards. Freshman guard Kiera Gaines also registered 11 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Senior guard Amanda O'Neill scored nine and posted two rebounds, while Kate Cloxton, another senior guard, added five assists. Sophomore guard Jessica Moore tacked on five points.

Devin Fothergill led PC with seven points, while Shonda Burnside collected six points, three rebounds and a game-high four blocks in the loss. Mariah Pietrowski, Sherece Smith and Kristin Stevens also added five apiece for the Blue Hose.

After taking a 26-23 lead in the half, Campbell scored the second frame's first 11, fueled by nine straight points from Katelyn Bass to put the Lady Camels ahead 37-23 with 16:35 to play.

Campbell continued its run later in the half, going up 25 at 53-28 on Jessica Moore's three from the top of the key. That triple at the 11:19 mark of the second half, capped a 39-9 run for Campbell that began with 6:31 to go in the first. Moore's three also finished off a 27-5 run to start the second half.

The Lady Camels led by as many as 27 in the final stanza before taking the 68-44 home win. Campbell outscored the Blue Hose 42-21 in the second half.

The 24 point win marked Campbell's largest margin of victory this season, and its 27 point lead with 1:19 to go in the game was the largest lead over any opponent this season.

For the game, the Lady Camels posted 27 points off 17 PC turnovers and tallied 16 fast break points to Presbyterian's 0. Campbell also owned the paint outscoring PC 34-18, while outrebounding the Blue Hose 42-28.

The Lady Camels will close out the 2011-12 regular season next weekend with a pair of road tests. Campbell will head to UNC Asheville on March 2 before traveling to Gardner-Webb in the finale on March 5. The Big South Women's Basketball Championship begins on Friday, March 9 at High Point.
