Mary Weiss begins her 26th season on the Lady Camels coaching staff and her ninth as the associate head coach.

In her tenure at Campbell, Weiss has made quite an impact on Lady Camel basketball.

“Mary is a gifted teacher of the game who brings a wealth of beneficial experience and passion to the program,” said Lady Camel head coach Wando Watkins. “Her organizational skills are an asset to us in the recruitment process. Her loyalty to Campbell and this program as a player and teacher/coach of 24 years is greatly appreciated and almost unheard of this day and time.”

Weiss’ influence on the Lady Camel program in over two decades of service has even affected her former head coach.

The Hampton, Va., native assists in all aspects of coaching, including management of practice scheduling, coordination of recruiting and preseason activities. She also serves as assistant director for the Girls Basketball School held annually during the summer.

Since joining Watkins' staff in 1986-87, Weiss has played a vital leadership role for teams that have amassed nearly 400 wins.

Lady Camels have earned all-conference recognition 41 times during her tenure while four have been named league Player of the Year six different times.

In the span from 1987-92, the Camels appeared in six-straight Big South Conference championship games and won the 1989 league title. Campbell won the Big South regular season crown in 1991. She also assisted on the team that posted a 22-9 mark, won the 2000 Atlantic Sun Championship, and earned a berth into the 2000 NCAA East Regionals.

The biggest payoff to having Weiss on staff, however, has been her loyalty and dedication to the program.

“The loyalty and dedication Mary has shown to this University and to our women’s basketball program is often unheard of in this day and time,” said Watkins.  “Her longevity at Campbell as well as her service has given us consistency in our staff and has permeated the idea of being dedicated to our purpose.  She is a winner in everyway that reflects the ‘team-winning’ concept we strive for in our program through example.”

A standout guard for the Camels from 1983-85, Weiss still holds the school record for career assists average (6.8), dealing 342 assists in 50 games. As a player, Weiss started 48 of 50 games and led the team to a 31-20 record in two seasons, including a berth in the 1985 NAIA District 26 title contest.

Weiss, who was named to the all-tournament team at the '85 district event, averaged 8.0 points during her career and also finished with 128 rebounds and 69 steals. The 1985 team captain registered a career-high 14 assists in a game against High Point on January 4, 1985.

Weiss was also a standout athlete at Chowan College in Murfreesboro, N.C., before transferring to Campbell. While there, Weiss was named Female Athlete of the Year in 1983 after earning all-district and all-regional honors on the basketball court. That same year she was also named Who's Who Among American Junior College students. In 1994, she was inducted into Chowan’s Sports Hall of Fame.

Weiss graduated from Chowan in 1983 with an associate degree in physical education. She then earned her B.S. in physical education at Campbell in 1985 and in 1987 obtained her master's degree at Campbell.

A member of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, Weiss resides in Clayton.
