Troy State falls to Campbell 68-59 in A-Sun Battle
TROY, ALA. Senior forward April Cromartie scored 18 of
her 27 points in a first-half flurry, helping propel Campbell past
Troy State, 68-59, in Atlantic Sun Conference women's basketball
action here on Saturday.
Troy State (3-10, 2-4 A-Sun) trailed 34-27 at the half but battled back to forge a 40-40 tie with less than 13 minutes to play. A 17-5 run by the Camels (7-7, 5-2 A-Sun) all but ended the comeback attempt over the next three minutes, however, and Troy State could never recover.
The Camels shot 47 percent from the floor (24-of-51), including a 10-for-15 performance by Cromartie, who also had nine rebounds. The Camels also hit 15-of-19 from the foul line and outrebounded the Lady Trojans, 35-30.
"I thought we had a good enough effort to win," Troy State head coach Jerry Hester said. "We are just not scoring right now, and it seems like the girls are just waiting for someone else to step up and carry the load. We'll just keep working hard. Something good is going to happen to us."
Troy State was led in scoring by Chaquita Alexander's 11 points. The Lady Trojans shot 40 percent (23-of-58) from the floor and from 3-point range (9-of-23). The Lady Trojans hit just four of their seven free-throw attempts.
Stacey Hinkle added 12 points for the Camels, while Laurie Tinsley and Thea Herring each added nine points for the Lady Trojans. [ box score]
