BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell's swim team opens the 2011-12 season this weekend on the road with a triple dual meet against Radford, Marshall, James Madison on Saturday, Oct. 1, starting at 2 p.m. at the Dedmon Center Natatorium.
Radford is a fellow Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association rival of Campbell that finished ninth at the CCSA Championships last season. The top swimming returners for the Highlanders are Jessica Frazelle, who had 12 top-three finishes last year, and junior Emily Turner, who led the squad with 13 top-three finishes. Marshall set 37 program records at the 2011 C-USA Championships. Sophomore Heather Moore is the top returner for the Thundering Herd and had 15 top-three finishes last season. James Madison went 10-5 last season in dual meets and finished second at the CAA Championships. Eva Hannesdottir won the 100-free at CAA Championships and is the team's top returner swimmer.
Campbell's team this season is an interesting mix of young experienced swimmers and eight newcomers. CU is expected to be led by the sophomore trio of Cheriesse Campbell, Kylie Warne and Kaitlyn Burnette. Campbell had an outstanding rookie campaign with 28 top-three finishes. The Sunrise, Fla. native capped off her season by becoming the second Campbell swimmer to ever earn CCSA All-Conference honors when she placed third in the 1,650-free. Cheriesse Campbell is also CU's current record holder in four events (200-free, 500-free, 1,000-free and 1,650-free). Warne also had a strong opening year in placing in the top-three 22 times including 13 individual victories. Burnette is the Camels' current record holder in four events (100-butterfly, 50-back, 100-back and 200-back). Campbell will also be counting on the leadership of returning upperclassmen Melissa Eller, Cameron Gorse, Michelle Key, Libby Sanderson and Kaitlyn Tunstall. The head coach of the Camels beginning his and the program's eighth season is Pascal Molinard.
Next the swim team travels to Hickory, N.C. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 6 p.m. CU's first home meet this season is on Saturday, Oct. 15 when the Camels host College of Charleston and Queens University of Charlotte at 2 p.m.
