Gardner-Webb Drops Softball, 3-2

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.  – Campbell's softball team (19-20, 4-4 Big South) dropped the team's second consecutive game with a 3-2 conference loss to Gardner-Webb (17-20, 4-5 Big South) on Friday, April 6, at Varsity Field.

The Runnin' Bulldogs scored the game-winning run on a bases loaded ground out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Samantha Meenaghan started the frame with a single. Jordyn Arrowood moved her to second with her base on balls. Savannah Burns reached on a fielder's choice in which no out could be recorded. With the bases loaded in a tied game and no one out sophomore Olivia Scarborough got a pop out for the first out. The next batter, Morgan Baker, hit a grounder to the CU second baseman. Sophomore Shaela Churchill was able to tag the runner going by, but her throw home was too late to cut off the game-winning run as Meenaghan scampered home.

Scarborough (3-2) took the loss and allowed three runs in 6.2 innings worked. The win was earned by GWU's Cindy Boomhower (6-5) in relief. Boomhower enter the game in the third inning and went 4.2 scoreless with five strikeouts, one hit allowed and one walk.

The Camels loaded the bases in the opening inning as freshman Ericka Nesbitt walked, Stephanie Jones singled to left and Raven Lee singled to right, but a strikeout and lineout ended the inning in its tracks.

CU scored the team's two runs in the third inning. Nesbitt reached first and took second on a throwing error from the Gardner-Webb second baseman. Junior Sarah Forgacs walked and then stole second. Jones drove in Nesbitt with a sacrifice fly. Lee then singled to left to plate Forgacs from second with the second run of the inning and game.

The Runnin' Bulldogs tied the game at two all with a pair in the fifth inning. Meenaghan reached on a one-out single. Arrowood reached on a single up the middle. The ball was bobbled by the CU centerfielder to allow Meenaghan to move to third. Burns drove in Meenaghan with her single. McKenzie Morenus then drove in Arrowood with a single to left.

Campbell completes the series and attempts to take a game with a 1 p.m. contest against the Bulldogs at Varsity Field on Saturday, April 7.
