CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Campbell's softball team (16-16) fell to No. 23 North Carolina (23-8) by a 9-0 score in five innings in Chapel Hill on Wednesday, March 28. The Camels' hit on the evening belonged to freshman Stephanie Jones in the fifth inning.
Junior Brittany Arnn (6-7) was tagged with the loss and allowed five runs (four earned) in one-third of an inning. Sophomore Olivia Scarborough threw 2.2 innings in relief and allowed four runs (one earned). Freshman Julia Callicutt threw the final scoreless inning for CU. North Carolina's Lori Spingola (17-6) flirted with a no-hitter and allowed just one hit and one walk in throwing a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts.
North Carolina scored first with five in the first inning. Keeli Wheeler reached on a fielding error and moved to second as Amy Nece laid down a bunt single. Ally Blake drove in Wheeler with her single to right. On the play at the plate Nece moved to third. Blake then stole second as Nece was thrown out at the plate trying to take home. Logan Foulks followed with a home run to left to increase the margin to three. Hailey Dickey singled and came in to score on Constance Orr's home run.
The Tar Heels scored four more in the second inning as Campbell committed three miscues in the frame. CU walked the lead-off batter as Kelsey Green started the frame with a base on balls. Wheeler then reached on an error. A sacrifice bunt moved each runner up a base. Ally Blake then reached on fielding error from the CU shortstop that scored Green. Foulks then reached on another Campbell error to plate Wheeler. Dickey scored the next run with her sacrifice fly. Dickey moved to second on a wild pitch and scored the final run of the inning and game on Orr's single to right field.
Next CU returns home for a three-game conference series against Radford (14-8, 1-0 Big South) starting on Friday, March 30, at 4 p.m.
