Softball Falls To Albany, 2-1
ROCK HILL, S.C. – Campbell's softball team (11-12) dropped its first game of the day at the Winthrop/Adidas Invitational by a 2-1 count to Albany (3-3) on Friday afternoon, March 9. The Camels were limited to three hits in the game and also gave up a pair of unearned runs on a throwing error.
Freshman Julia Callicutt (3-2) was tagged with the loss in allowing two unearned runs in throwing her third complete game. The win was earned by Albany's Brittany McFawn (1-1). She struck out 10 CU players in winning her first game of the campaign.
Albany scored first with two unearned runs in the second inning. Mel Herndon reached on a two-out single. A walk to Lauren Alcorn moved her to second. Both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch. Both Herndon and Alcorn then came in to score as the ball hit by Stephanie Talerico was thrown away by the CU third baseman.
CU threatened in the third inning. Sophomore Shaela Churchill reached on a lead-off single. A sacrifice moved her to second and she took third on junior Sarah Forgacs' single up the middle. The next two were retired in order though on an infield pop out and strike out to end the threat and keep the score at 2-0 Great Danes.
The Camels broke through for a run in the sixth inning. Forgacs started the frame with a bunt single. A sacrifice bunt from freshman Ericka Nesbitt in which the ball was thrown wide moved Forgacs to second and allowed Nesbitt to reach. After a strikeout and fly out, senior Taylor McGee walked to load the bases. Freshman Erica Johnson drove CU's lone run of the game as she was also walked.
The Camels keep playing in the tournament with a game against Bowling Green at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
