GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Campbell's softball team (9-11) battled No. 3/4 Florida (19-1) tough, but fell by a 4-0 score on the third day of the Lipton Invitational. The Gators were able to score a run in the first, two in the third and one in the fifth in the victory.
Junior Brittany Arnn (4-5) took the loss for Campbell and allowed four runs in her six innings worked. The win was earned by Hannah Rogers (10-0). Rogers struck out eight and only allowed three hits in throwing the shutout.
The Camels' first inning started promising as junior Sarah Forgacs hit a double to short left field. A sacrifice bunt moved her to third with only one out, but Rogers retired the middle of the CU order on a strikeout and pop out to go unscathed.
Florida was able to squeak a run on the board in the first inning. Michelle Moultrie reached first on her two-out bunt single. She stole second and scored from second on Kelsey Horton's soft liner that hit off the CU third baseman.
Florida added two more runs to the lead in the third inning. Sami Fagan reached on an infield single. She took second on a bunt and third on a ground out. After Lauren Haeger was hit by a pitch both runners moved up a base and Sami Fagan scored on the wild pitch. Kelsey Horton then doubled in Haeger for the third run of the game.
The Gators put another run to the lead in the fifth inning on Moultrie's inside the park home run.
CU picked up the team's second hit of the game on Christina Melton's single to start the sixth inning. Freshman Kerstine Womack was inserted to run for Melton. She raced around the bases, but was thrown out at home after Forgacs doubled to the gap.
CU now returns home to take on Hampton in a doubleheader on March 7 starting at 3 p.m.
