Men’s Tennis Home Match Delayed
BUIES CREEK, N.C. – With a threat of rain for Wednesday, the Campbell men's tennis team pushed back its spring home-opener against Elon to Thursday afternoon at 1:30p.m.
"I know the guys are eager," said head coach David Johnson. "Win or lose, this time of year, we need to play. We're definitely looking forward to the match."
The Camels recently took part in the VCU Invitational on Jan. 18-19, playing a four singles, one doubles match format. While defeating Georegtown, 3-2, and Morgan State, 5-0, Campbell was unable to top host No. 31 VCU.
After the event was over, newcomer Rik Van Gerwen (Valkenswaard, Netherlands) nabbed the Big South Conference Crons Brand Freshman of the Week, going 2-0 in singles play for the weekend.
Going into the Elon match, junior Fernando Guillen (San Louis Potosi, Mexico) leads the team with nine singles victories. Sophomores Steven Billington (Conway, Wales, U.K.) and Adrien Rossignon (Arlon, Belgium) also head into match play with nine successful singles points.
In doubles play, Guillen and senior David Clavera (Barcelona, Spain) partnered together 14 times for a 10-4 record in the fall.
Campbell was victorious in last year's home opener, defeating Longwood, 6-1, who is now a member of the Big South Conference. The Camels went on to post a 11-11 record, and 4-4 in the Big South.
For Elon, this will be its second match of the season, after falling to No.5 Duke, 9-0. The Pheonix went 9-15 in 2011, and will be bringing two ITA ranked players, No. 21 Cameron Silverman, and No. 117 Stefan Fortmann.
The Camels go on the road for their next three matches, starting Saturday Feb. 2 at Charlotte with the match set for noon. Their next home match will be Feb. 23 against Radford, starting at 1:00p.m.
