RICHMOND, Va. – The Campbell men's tennis team opened the spring campaign at the Virginia Commonwealth 4-1 Invitational with a 2-1 record. The Camels defeated Georgetown, 3-2, on Friday, and Morgan State, 5-0, on Saturday morning, but were unable to top host No. 31 VCU, 0-4.

Sophomore Steven Billington (Conway, Wales) and freshman Rik Van Gerwen (Valkenswaard, Nethersland) aided Campbell (2-1) by picking up two singles victories. The Camels experimented with doubles tandems as senior Josep Baro (Barcelona, Spain) played with sophomore Adrien Rossingnon and senior Ondrej Kralik (Herlev, Denmark) to notch the Camels two doubles wins on the weekend.

The toughest draw for Campbell came in the opener against a ranked VCU squad, who notched a sweep, 4-0. The format of the indoor tournament allowed for four singles and one double match to be played concurrently.

In doubles, Baro/Rossignon took the first, 6-4, and third, 6-3, sets against Alex Tropiano and Casey Distaso to notch the first point for Campbell. The duo continued their strong play after capturing matches together during the fall season.

Billington came back in his match with consecutive 6-1, 6-2 victories to tie the team total at two-all.

Everything came down to the final match as Van Gerwen secured a set two victory by winning a thrilling tiebreaker, 10-8. The Valkenswaard, Netherlands native took the third set, 6-4, to provide Campbell with a 3-2 win in the match.
