Guillen Captures Jim Causey Invitational Title

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Campbell men's tennis team notched three singles flight victories on Saturday at the Jim Causey Invitational in Davidson, N.C. Junior Fernando Guillen (San Louis Potosi, Mexico) won Flight I of the event by taking all three matches to grab the tournament title.

In the process of being declared the champion, Guillen knocked off Schafer from Davidson, 7-6, 6-2, King from Appalachian State, 7-6, 7-0, and Williams from UNC Charlotte, 6-3,7-6. The San Potosi, Mexico native was taken to the brink in at least one set by each of his opponents, but the reigning Big South Freshman of the Year was able to come through with the victory each time

The second flight was swept by sophomore Adrien Rossignon (Arlon, Belgium) as he knocked off his first competitor Kunz from Davidson, 6-3, 6-2. He would need a third-set tiebreaker to claim victories over Greve (12-10) from Appalachian State and Calott (10-6) of UNC Charlotte.

In the seventh flight, an impressive performance was posted by senior Ondrej Kralik (Herlev, Denmark), who defeated hit three opponents. Kralik need a third-set tiebreaker to get past Kallick from Davidson, 10-6, before capturing the first two sets against Smith of Appalachian State and Weber of UNC Charlotte.

Sophomore Steven Billington (Conway, Wales) and seniors Joesp Baro (Barcelona, Spain) and David Clavera (Barcelona, Spain) playing in the third, fourth and fifth flights, respectively, fought to one win each in the four-team round-robin format.

In the doubles competition, Campbell posted a 2-1 mark in each of the first two flights from the tandems of Rossingnon/Baro and Guillen/Clavera.

The Camels are back in action on Oct. 18-22 for the ITA Regional at the Cary Tennis Center.
