BUIES CREEK – Steven Billington has been selected as this week's Big South Conference Crons Brand Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. The Conway, Whales native finished the regular season at 6-6 in singles play, and 3-1 in doubles play.
Billington finished 2-0 in singles this past week playing in the number three position. He picked up two straight set victories over Gardner Webb's Joao Poli (6-0, 6-2) and a UNC Greensboro's Cameron Smith (6-2, 6-2). Billington was one of two Camels to finish undefeated during these stretch of matches.
In doubles play, Billington and partner August Iwdal finished 2-0 this past week in the number three spot. The duo picked up wins over Poli and Brenden Dempsey of Gardner-Webb (8-6), and Smith and Jimmy Rouche of UNCG (8-5).
Billington has helped the Camels to a 10-10 overall record and a 4-3 record in Big South Conference play following their 4-3 win over UNCG this past Saturday. Campbell is currently riding a three match winning streak, and has earned the four seed in this weekend's Big South Tennis Championships.
This is the first career conference freshman of the week selection for Billington, and the second for the Camels this season.
Billington and the rest of the Camels return to the courts Thursday, April 19 as they travel to Asheville, N.C. for the Big South Men's Tennis Championships. Campbell will take on fifth seeded Winthrop at 10:30 am.
