Men’s Tennis Faces Winthrop in Big South Quarterfinal Thursday

BUIES CREEK – Following its 4-3 conference record (10-10 overall) Campbell has earned the four seed in this weekend's Big South Tennis Championships and will face the five seed Winthrop in the quarterfinals Thursday at 10:30 am. The tournament will be hosted by UNC Asheville and will be played at the Asheville Downtown Racquet Club in Asheville, N.C.

2012 Regular Season

Campbell finished the regular season riding a three match winning streak, concluding with a non-conference win over UNC Greensboro on Saturday. The Camels picked up four conference wins over Liberty, Presbyterian, Gardner-Webb, and Winthrop. They also earned six non-conference victories, highlighted by wins over in-state rival East Carolina and #75 DePaul.

Adrien Rossignon and Fernando Guillen led the Camels this season with 14-6 overall singles records in the top two positions. Rossignon also finished 3-2 against nationally ranked opponents, highlighted by a victory over #47 Max Wennakoski of VCU. The Arlon, Belgium native was ranked #125 in the February 16 ITA national rankings.

February 17 against Winthrop

The Camels knocked off the Eagles 4-3 on February 17 in both team's Big South conference openers in Rock Hill, S.C. Campbell picked up singles victories from Guillen, Josep Baro, and August Iwdal. They also captured the doubles points with victories from duo's Rossignon and Baro and Guillen and David Clavera.

The Rest of the Big South

Radford finished the season with a 7-0 Big South record and was named the Big South Men's Tennis Regular-Season Champion, it was determined today as the conference season concluded Sunday afternoon. UNC Asheville and Coastal Carolina finished Conference play with identical 5-2 records. In the tiebreaker procedure, the Bulldogs claimed the No. 2 seed and the Chanticleers took the No. 3 spot.

 Winthrop and Liberty finished Big South competition with 3-4 records, but with the tiebreaker procedure, The Eagles earned the No. 5 position and the Flames landed the No. 6 spot.  Presbyterian College picked up the No. 7 seed as it finished with a 1-6 League record, while Gardner-Webb rounds out the seeding with its 0-7 record vs. Conference foes.

If the Camels defeat the Eagles on Thursday they would advance to the semifinals and face the winner of the Radford / Gardner-Webb quarterfinal match on Friday at 10:00 am. The Big South's tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament.  The Conference Championship schedule is as follows:
