Fernando Guillen Named Big South Player of the Week

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Sophomore Fernando Guillen has been selected as this week's Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. The San Louis Potisi, Mexico native is 4-1 in singles play, and 2-1 in doubles play this season.

Guillen finished 3-0 in singles this past week playing in the number one position. He picked up straight set victories over Longwood's Nobu Tanaka (6-1, 7-5), Winthrop's Nadav Ruppin (6-4, 6-1), and Davidson's Chris Mark (6-2, 6-3). He was the only Camel to finish undefeated during these stretch of matches.

In doubles play, Guillen and partner David Clavera finished 2-1 this past week in the number two spot. The duo picked up wins over Tanaka and Giorgi Khmiadashvili of Longwood (8-1), and Dylan Comerford and Rich Meade of Winthrop (9-7).

Guillen has helped the Camels to a 3-2 overall record and a 1-0 record in Big South Conference play following their 4-3 win over Winthrop this past Friday.

This is the first career conference player of the week selection for Guillen, and the first for the Camels this season. He was named conference freshman of the year last season following a 16-5 singles record.

Guillen and the rest of the Camels return to the courts Friday, February 24 as they take on USC Upstate in Spartanburg S.C. Match time is set for 2:00 pm.
