Men’s Tennis 2012 Season Outlook

BUIES CREEK - Following a sixteen year stint in the Atlantic Sun Conference, Campbell returns to the Big South Conference for the 2012 season after finishing 17-5 in 2011. The Camels were 8-2 in A-Sun play last season and earned the third seed in the A-Sun Championship. Campbell reached its fourth consecutive tournament semifinal but fell to eventual tournament champion East Tennessee State. Senior Davy Sum compiled a perfect 20-0 singles record en route to being named A-Sun player of the year.    

Preseason Prediction

The Camels were picked to finish fourth in the annual Big South preseason polls. The poll was conducted by league coaches, and Campbell earned 42 points, including one vote for second place and three votes for third place. Radford was picked to finish first in the polls with 61 points, and five votes for first.

Returning Players

Campbell returns seven letter winners from last year's squad, including four starters. Fernando Guillen returns for his sophomore season after being named A-Sun freshman of the year and finishing with a 15-5 overall singles record. Also returning is junior Dominik Kaniewski who was named to the all-conference second team after compiling a 12-3 record in the spring season.

Juniors Josep Baro, David Clavera, and Ondrej Kralik return for their third seasons in the orange and black. Sophomores James Jones and Garrison Kinney also return for their second seasons at CU.

Newcomers

Four freshmen have joined the 2012 CU tennis squad. Steven Billington is a 6-2 freshman from Bodelwyddan, Whales, and joined the team in January.

Adrien Rossignon is a 6-2 freshman from Arlon, Belgium. Rossignon had the best singles record out of the three freshmen in the fall season at 8-6.

August Iwdal is a 6-3 freshman from Gothenburg, Sweden. Iwdal experienced success in doubles play with partner Ondrej Kralik in the fall season. The duo finished with a 9-2 record and won three doubles titles.

Landon Rogers is a 6-2 freshman from High Point, N.C. Rogers was a four time all-conference selection at Ledford High School in Thomasville N.C. He was a two time conference MVP and is the all time wins leader at Ledford (83-15).

The Schedule

The 2012 spring schedule is comprised of nineteen matches including eight matches in Buies Creek. Campbell opens its schedule on January 20 with two matches at the VCU Indoor Invitational against Drexel and VCU. The Camels home opener is February 15 against Longwood, and their Big South opener is February 18 at Winthrop. Along with seven conference matches, the Camels will square off with regional rivals UNC Wilmington, NC State, East Carolina, and UNC Greensboro. Campbell will conclude its 2012 schedule at the Big South Championship in Asheville, N.C. on April 19-21.

Last Season against the BSC

Campbell finished 3-0 against Big South opponents in the 2011 spring season. Campbell defeated Liberty 5-2 last year in the home opener. CU also defeated Coastal Carolina 5-2 and UNC Asheville 7-0 in Buies Creek last season.
