Va. - The Campbell University men's tennis team opened their 2011
spring season with a pair of victories Friday at the VCU Indoor
Invitational. The Camels blanked both Howard and Georgetown by a
CU did not drop a single set in the match against Howard. Senior Davy Sum got his season off to a quick start by defeating Chris Brown in the number one position (6-3, 5-0 ret). In the number two position, Larbi Lamzouri defeated Omar Haloui (6-2, 6-3) and newcomer Fernando Guillen picked up his first career win as a Camel by beating Eric Chavous in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
Sophomore David Clavera beat George Diggs 6-1, 6-2 in the number four position, while Ondrej Kralik and James Jones earned the doubles point for the Camels (6-2, 7-5) to make it a clean sweep to start the season.
In their second match of the day, Sum picked up his second victory of the year by defeating Michael Clarke of Georgetown 6-0, 6-2 in the number one position. Lamzouri and Guillen continued their winning ways as Lamzouri defeated Andrew Bruhn in the number two position (6-2, 5-7, 6-2) and Guillen beat Tim Walsh in the number three position (6-2, 6-0)
Dominik Kaniewski earned his first victory of the season as he defeated Casey Distaso 7-5, 6-4 while Clavera and Josep Baro picked up the doubles point in the closest match of the day for the Camels (6-4, 4-6, 7-6).
Campbell improves to 5-3 all time in the VCU Invitational and begins the season 2-0 for the first time since 2006.
The Camels return to the courts February 12 in Wilmington N.C. as they take on UNC Wilmington. Match time is set for 12:00 p.m.
