BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Mitchell Cardenas scored twice to lead Campbell to a 3-2 win over Richmond Saturday in pre-season men's soccer action at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
Cardenas scored on a touch-and-shoot off the opening kick-off just eight seconds into the contest. The senior midfielder added a 22nd-minute strike for the Camels, who drew 1-1 earlier in the week at Clemson.
Richmond nearly equalized in the fourth minute when Colby Abrahamoff's 35-yard shot deflected off the crossbar.
Richmond scored in the 57th minute on a counter attack down the left flank. Houston Oldham sent a cross to Oliver Murphy's feet for a one-timer.
The Camels nearly added a fourth goal in the 73rd minute when Patrick Moore gained possession at the top of the box and slid a diagonal pass to Cardenas, but the Mexico City native's right-footed shot hit the left post.
Campbell junior center back Travis Golden preserved the two-goal edge just two minutes later when Richmond's Joel Teah shot toward an empty net, but the junior from Austin, Texas was able to clear the ball for a corner kick.
However, on the ensuing play, Nick Butler nodded home Brandon Jordi's corner to trim the margin to 3-2.
The Camels finished with a 15-13 edge in shots. Richmond starting keeper Zac Brown had two saves, while Thomas Hand made one while playing the final 45 minutes.
Campbell opens its regular season on Friday (Aug. 24) at 16th-ranked SMU.
