CLEMSON, S.C. -- Campbell and Clemson battled to a 1-1 draw Tuesday night in the men's soccer pre-season opener for both schools.

After falling behind by a goal, the Camels drew even when senior defender Ben Iiames knocked in a loose ball in the area following Mitchell Cardenas' corner kick.

Preston Gayton capitalized off a Camel turnover in the 21st minute, when he hit a left-footed shot that Campbell keeper Ethan Hall was able to deflect, but not keep out of the goal.

Just after 38 minutes, Iiames brought Campbell level.

The Camels finished with a 9-8 edge in shots.

Following regulation, the Camels won a penalty kick shootout 4-3.

The Camels stand 1-0-2 in their last three matches over all competition against Atlantic Coast Conference foes.  During the 2011 regular season, Campbell defeated North Carolina State 1-0 on Iiames' golden goal.  The Camels also drew at Virginia Tech.

"We learned a lot about ourselves," said Campbell head coach Steve Armas.  "Now we have to get back out to training and prepare for Richmond.  We had some bright moments, and also some to learn from.  I was pleased overall because we were able to get the majority of our guys some minutes."

Campbell concludes its pre-season schedule Saturday when it hosts Atlantic-10 member Richmond in a 6:00 p.m. kick-off at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
