Campbell University has been voted as winner of the 2011 Big South Conference’s Team Sportsmanship Award for men’s soccer. The Fighting Camels shared the honor with Liberty.

Mitchell Cardenas was selected first-team all-conference in voting by league head coaches. Justin Franz and Travis Golden were second-team selections, while Jhuvon Francis and Jonathan Ray earned all-freshman team honors. Ethan Hall was chosen for the Big South men’s soccer all-academic team.

The Chanticleers (16-2, 9-0) won their 12th-straight outing and enter next week’s Big South tournament as the top seed. Campbell (9-8-2, 5-4-0) lost its second-consecutive contest and will carry the third seed into Wednesday’s Big South quarterfinal at Boiling Springs, N.C.

Mitchell Cardenas scored twice, including what proved to be the winner with 10:04 remaining, and Campbell defeated VMI 3-2 Saturday evening at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Cardenas’ double was his second in as many games this week and lifted the Camels (9-6-2, 5-2-0) to their fourth-straight victory.

Riding a three-match winning streak and unbeaten in its last four outings, Campbell hosts VMI Saturday at 5:00 p.m. on Senior Day at the Eakes Athletic Complex. CU enters the event with a 5-1-1 mark in its last seven contests. In addition to recognizing seniors Nick Burdett and Brian Urioste during pre-game ceremonies, Campbell will also hand out its annual awards in memory of Jim McVeigh and Glen Brewster.

Campbell (8-6-2, 4-2 Big South) extended its league winning streak to three matches and is now unbeaten (3-0-1) in its last four outings.

Keegan Terry put the Camels in front in the 19th minute. Mitchell Cardenas and Justin Franz also scored in a 1:16 span after 75 minutes to seal the victory for CU. The Camels finished the night with a 28-5 advantage in shots, 13-1 in attempts on goal.

Radford rallied from a half-time deficit for the second-straight game and defeated Campbell 2-1 Wednesday in the Big South Conference men’s soccer opener for both teams. The Highlanders (5-3, 1-0) rode a 49th-minute own goal and Bernardo Ulmo’s 65th minute free kick to its fourth victory in the last five outings. Campbell (3-5-1, 0-1-0) dropped its fifth-straight game despite taking a 29th minute lead.

Ranked 10th in the South Atlantic Region poll, the Fighting Camels (3-0-1) are off to the program’s best start since the 1988 squad won its first seven matches.
