Aaron Johnson joined the Fighting Camel staff as assistant coach in April 2010.  As a four-time all-conference keeper from 2005-08, Johnson helped the Camels win three trophies during his playing career.

A two-time Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year, Johnson returned to his alma mater after serving as assistant coach in 2009 at the University of Dayton.  Johnson is involved in all facets of the Fighting Camel program, including recruiting and on-field coaching, while overseeing goalkeeper training.

In 2010, Campbell’s starting keeper Ryan Amons produced six shutouts, including overtime draws with Loyola (Md.) and Furman.

During Johnson’s year with the Flyers, Dayton won the Atlantic-10 Conference regular season title and finished No.-21 in the final NSCAA poll, while compiling an overall record of 14-5-1, 7-1-0 in the league.

At Dayton, Johnson helped coach five NSCAA all-region selections, including goalkeeper Tyler Picard, who helped the team post nine shutouts, plus a stretch of 14 wins in 15 outings.

“I am extremely excited about being back at Campbell to be a part of a coaching staff and university that I greatly respect,” said Johnson.  “It’s a blessing to come back and coach at my alma mater.  Collectively, Coach Armas, Coach Englishby and I want to further continue the success this program has had.”

During his playing career, Johnson broke Campbell University school keeper marks for matches played (74) and started (74), minutes played (6805) and career goals-against average (1.08) during his four-year career.  His 331 saves and 21 shutouts are second only to Peter Moore’s 406 in the 48-year history of the Camel program.

In A-Sun history, Johnson stands second in both career GAA and shutouts and sixth in saves.  During Johnson’s four-year career, Campbell won two A-Sun regular season championships (2005, 2008), one A-Sun tournament title (2007), and made the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Division I College Cup (2007).  The Camels were ranked in the South Region in each of his four years and compiled a 50-25-6 overall record (.654).  CU also posted the best A-Sun regular season record (25-4-4, .818) of all league members since the start of the 2005 season and received the program’s first national ranking since 1988.

He was named first-team all-conference three times (2006-08) and second-team all-conference once, while earning Defensive Player of the Year honors twice (2005, 2008).  Johnson was also tabbed second-team All-South Region in 2008 and captured A-Sun all-tournament honors on three occasions (2005-07).

“We are thrilled to have Aaron back working with the program,” said head coach Steve Armas.  “It is always a special moment when you have someone come back that has gone through the program.  Aaron’s contributions during his time here as a student-athlete in 2005-2008 were tremendous.  His ability to relate to players and maximize their development was evident in his time at Campbell.  I look forward to continuing to work with Aaron and having him pass on his work ethic and experiences to our goal keepers, which is his primary responsibility.”

Johnson is also involved in club soccer as head coach of two Youth Development Academy teams with Triangle United FC.  He was head coach of the U17-White boys team and as director of goalkeeper training for the Metro FC in Dayton, Ohio.

A native of St. Charles, Mo., Johnson led Christian Brothers College High School to a Missouri state championship and 31-2-1 record in 2004.  He was also the starting keeper for the Scott Gallagher Soccer Club, which won the 2003 U.S. Club Soccer National Championship and 2004 USYSA national title.

Johnson earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Campbell in 2009.
