Bertinotti finishes as runner-up at Big South Championship

NINETY SIX, S.C. –Gaston Bertinotti tied for runner-up honors and Campbell moved up to fifth place in the team standings after Wednesday's final round of the Big South Conference men's golf championship at The Patriot at Grand Harbor.

A native of Cordoba Argentina, Bertinotti (70-70-74—214) produced the best finish by a Campbell freshman in his conference tournament since Vaita Guillaume was runner-up in the 2009 Atlantic Sun Championship.

No.-35 Liberty (290-293-284—867) shot four-under as a team Wednesday to finish with a five-stroke win over runner-up Charleston Southern (286-303-283—872).  Coastal Carolina was third (285-303-290—878), followed by Radford (292-303-292—887) and Campbell (296-306-292—894), which was four strokes better than sixth-place Winthrop in the 10-school event.

Medalist Ben Wheeler of Coastal Carolina played bogey-free golf over the final 27 holes to finish at 5-under-par 211 (70-72-69) on the par-72, 7210-yard Patriot layout.  Bertinotti, who was playing in only his sixth collegiate event, shared second place with 18- and 36-hole leader David Denlinger of Charleston Southern (66-73-75—214).

Chase Marinell of Liberty (71-73-71—215) and Radford's Tanner Carbaugh (70-74-72—216) joined Wheeler, Bertinotti and Denlinger on the all-championship team.

Only Mathieu Fenasse of Liberty made more pars (40) than Bertinotti (39) in the 50-golfer field.  The Campbell freshman also had 9 birdies on the event, played the par-3 holes even and was one-under on the par-4s, third-best in the field.

Fellow Campbell freshman Craig Hornberger played his last nine holes 4-under-par and finished in a tie for 18th (73-77-74—224).  The product of Lancaster, Pa., also played the par-3 holes even and made 9 birdies in the 54-hole event.

Sophomore Mikko Lehtovuori finished with a 3-under-par 69 including an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole – his tournament-leading third of the event.  The Lahti, Finland resident tied for 18th place (75-80-69—224), thanks in part to playing the par-5s at seven-under.

Senior Amanjyot Singh, the lone Camel to play all 33 rounds for the team this year, closed out his career with a 3-over-par day and tied for 35th (79-79-75—233).  Junior Grant Houser finished in a tie for 44th place (78-85-76—239).

"I'm very happy with our performance today," said Campbell head coach John Crooks.  "All five guys battled from start to finish.  Mikko stepped up and had one of the better rounds of the day with a 69.  Gaston was in the tournament all the way.  If not for a bad break on 17, he might have had a chance to win.  While it wasn't our best year, we came in seeded seventh and beat several teams ranked ahead of us.  I'm thrilled with the performance today."
