Camels tied for 4th after 18 holes of Big South men's golf championship

NINETY-SIX, S.C. -- Alvaro Veiga is tied for fifth place and Campbell is in fourth in the team standings after Sunday's first round of the Big South Conference men's golf championship at The Patriot Golf Club.

A freshman from LaCoruna, Spain, Veiga had five birdies Sunday to lead the 50-player field while shooting a one-over 73 on the par-72 Patriot layout.  Campbell junior Amanjyot Singh and sophomore Mikko Lehtovuori are tied for 15th place at plus-four 76.

Sophomore Grant Houser shot 79 and is tied for 28th, while freshman Jeremy Milton is 49th after shooting 88.

Max McKay of Liberty leads the event at 2-under 70, one stroke ahead of Coastal Carolina's Sebastian Soderberg.

Liberty shot six-over 294 on the day and holds a two-stroke lead over Coastal Carolina (296).  Winthrop is third (299), followed by Campbell (304) and Radford (304).  Presbyterian is sixth heading into Monday's second round.

The 54-hole tournament concludes Tuesday.
