Former Campbell standout David Mathis qualified for the U.S. Open on Monday at Columbus, Ohio. One day after tying for 25th place at the Memorial, the Raleigh resident shot three-under-par 71-68 and tied for third at the USGA qualifier where the top 16 players earned a trip to next week's event.
Mathis moved up 12 places to 95th in the PGA Tour FedEx Cup standings after producing his sixth top-25 showing in 18 events this year. Entering this week's FedEx St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Mathis has collected $564,940 in prize money.
His best showing of the year came at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, where he tied for 10th and earned $160,000.
In last year's St. Jude Classic, Mathis was the first round leader and tied for 13th after shooting 65-72-72-66. This year's event runs Thursday through Sunday and holds a $5.6 million purse.
The U.S. Open will be held June 14-17 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.
A native of Winston-Salem and Raleigh resident, Mathis led the Camels to consecutive Big South Conference titles in 1993 and 1994.
Former Camel Brad Fritsch, who plays on the Nationwide Tour, finished 16th in the USGA qualifier at Rockville, Md., where the top seven golfers advanced to the Open.
