Campbell grad David Mathis ('97) moved 28 places up the PGATour FedEx Cup standings this week after tying for 10th at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Mathis pocketed a $160,000 paycheck after finishing 13-under-par (72-69-69-65) on the par 72 TPC Louisiana layout in Avondale, La., a showing that propelled him to 136 on the FedEx Cup list. The finish was his second career top-10, ranking just behind his PGATour best showing of an 8th-place tie at the same event in 2011.
Through 13 events this season, Mathis has earned $264,270 and improved to No.-282 on the official Golf World Rankings. His 7-under-par 65 on Sunday lowered his final round scoring average to 68.67 strokes, 2nd-best on the PGATour.
Before finishing in a tie for 18th place two weeks ago at the Valero Texas Open, Mathis stood No.-207 on the FedEx Cup listing.
A native of Winston-Salem and Raleigh resident, Mathis led the Camels to consecutive Big South Conference titles in 1993 and 1994.
The PGATour stops in North Carolina this week for the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.
