Men's Golf finishes fourth at Big South Championship

NINETY SIX, S.C. – Campbell University finished in fourth place after Wednesday's final round of the Big South Conference men's golf championship.

Four Camels placed among the top 15 individuals as Campbell recorded its 10th top-five team showing in as many tournaments this season.

Led by individual medalist Robert Karlsson (69-68-69—206), 32nd-ranked and top-seeded Liberty claimed the team title at 20-under-par 844 (280-275-289).  Coastal Carolina (285-273-296—854) finished second, while Charleston Southern (285-279-295—859) was third.

Campbell (289-279-298—866) was fourth in the 9-school event, 13 strokes ahead of fifth-place Winthrop (291-289-299—879).

Freshman Grant Houser led all Campbell individuals with and 11th-place finish at even-par 216 (72-68-76).  The Holly Springs, N.C., native had 11 birdies and was the low freshman in the Big South Championship at the par-72, 7120-yard Patriot Golf Club.  Houser's second round 68 marked his collegiate career low round.  He improved his stroke average to 73.78 in 9 tournaments this year.

Senior Mitch Gray of Florence, S.C., tied for 12th place at one-over 217 (74-69-74), marking his fourth top-20 showing of the year.  Gray was named Big South men's golf scholar-athlete of the year during the post-tournament award ceremony.

Sophomore Amanjyot Singh of Rajasthan, India (74-73-71) and senior Vaita Guillaume (69-69-80) tied for 15th place at two-over 218.  Singh produced the team's low round of the day and garnered his 7th top-20 finish in 10 events.

A senior from Papeete, Tahiti, Guillaume entered the event atop the Big South Conference and ranked 7th nationally in stroke average (70.46).  He was five strokes off the lead before Wednesday's final round.  A first-team all-conference selection and Big South player of the year, Guillaume placed among the top-20 individuals (including four victories) in 9 of the team's 10 tournaments in 2011-12.

Freshman Kurtis Straw of Johnstown, Pa., tied for 44th (87-74-77—238).
